How to Talk to Your Partner About Intimacy (Without It Being Awkward)
Eight gentle openers for a conversation most couples avoid for years.

Plenty of couples who are close in every other way still find one topic hard to raise: what they actually want from intimacy. It’s not a sign anything is wrong — most of us were never taught how to have this conversation. The good news is that it gets dramatically easier with a little structure and the right opening.
Why it feels awkward (and why that’s normal)
Bringing up desire can feel like you’re risking rejection or implying something’s missing. So we avoid it, and the silence quietly builds. Naming that out loud — “this is a bit awkward for me to bring up, and that’s okay” — often dissolves half the tension on its own.
Pick a calm, low-pressure moment
Timing matters more than the perfect words. Not in the heat of the moment, and not during a disagreement. A relaxed walk, a long drive, or a quiet evening with no agenda gives the conversation room to breathe. Side-by-side, rather than face-to-face, often feels less intense.
Eight gentle ways to start
You don’t need a script. Any of these can open the door:
- “Is there something you’ve been curious about that we’ve never tried?”
- “What makes you feel closest to me?”
- “I read about couples doing a yes/no/maybe list — want to try it together?”
- “What’s something small that always makes you feel wanted?”
- “Is there anything you’ve wanted to tell me but weren’t sure how?”
- “When do you feel most connected to me lately?”
- “Are there things you used to enjoy that we’ve drifted away from?”
- “Would it be fun to each answer some questions privately and compare?”
Listen for the answer behind the answer
When your partner shares something, resist the urge to react quickly or fix anything. A simple “thank you for telling me” keeps the door open. The goal of a first conversation isn’t to resolve everything — it’s to prove to each other that this is a safe topic to keep returning to.
Let a tool carry the awkward part
If starting from a blank page feels daunting, it helps to have prompts and a little privacy. Our quiz gives you both the same set of topics to answer separately, then shows only where you align — so the conversation begins from a place of “here’s what we already have in common,” which is a much warmer place to start.
See where you and your partner align
Take the quiz together. You each answer privately, then see exactly where you match — and keep everything else to yourselves.
